Tia Tyndal, MA
2023 Sammons Award Winner
This award, named in honor of the National Register’s CEO from 2014 through 2022, is presented annually to two currently enrolled students in good standing in an APA- or CPA-accredited doctoral program in psychology and members of the National Register Associate Program. The award is designed to advance clinically oriented research projects that optimize the contributions of health service psychologists in the broader healthcare environment and that further the National Register’s goals of increasing psychology’s role in interprofessional health service. The Register will prioritize original research projects that advance our understanding of the effectiveness of psychological interventions and their contribution toward improved patient outcomes.
Each recipient will receive a plaque, a check for $5,000 to fund their project, and an award citation in the Journal of Health Service Psychology.
Named in honor of the National Register’s Executive Officer from 1990 through 2013, this award recognizes an outstanding National Register credentialed psychologist with less than 10 years of postdoctoral experience who demonstrates excellence in advancing psychology’s role in healthcare.
The recipients will be honored for their contributions to foster innovation in psychological practice, strengthen community well-being, advance advocacy efforts, or enhance the contributions of professional associations in health care. Achievements may include developing innovative practice tools, expanding access to mental health services, integrating psychology into health care systems, or driving policy and advocacy efforts that elevate the profession.
Contributions that address social determinants of health or efforts to reduce health disparities—particularly those impacting marginalized or underserved communities—are especially encouraged.
The recipient will receive a plaque, a $5,000 stipend, and an award citation in the Journal of Health Service Psychology.
These awards, named in honor of the National Register’s first Executive Officer, are the highest honors bestowed by the National Register. They commemorate numerous, significant contributions to psychology during a distinguished career of a National Register credentialed psychologist. The recipients will receive a plaque and an award citation in the Journal of Health Service Psychology.
The research excellence award will honor a recipient who has made—through research—a significant lifetime contribution toward health service psychology.
The practice award will be presented to a psychologist who has demonstrated—via clinical innovation, outreach, legislation, community engagement, or policy and social advocacy—that they have advanced the standing of health service psychology.

I am deeply honored and very appreciative to receive the Wellner Lifetime Achievement Award. As someone who was present at the creation of the National Register by Dr. Wellner and colleagues in their efforts to advance psychology as a healthcare profession, I am well aware of the enormous impact of this achievement over the decades. I am very humbled that the committee made the judgment that my achievements have contributed in at least a small way to our success as a profession.
