Jeffrey E. Barnett, PsyD, ABPP, Named 2017 Alfred M. Wellner Lifetime Achievement Award Winner


At the National Register’s spring meeting, the Board of Directors voted to present the 2017 Alfred M. Wellner, PhD, Lifetime Achievement Award to Jeffrey E. Barnett, PsyD, ABPP.

The award, named after the first Executive Officer, Alfred M. Wellner, PhD, is the highest honor bestowed on a Registrant by the National Register to commemorate numerous and significant contributions to psychology during a distinguished career.

Dr. Barnett was selected for the Wellner award based on his numerous professional accomplishments and leadership in psychology. Dr. Barnett has dedicated his career to developing and disseminating ethics and standards for psychological practice. He has also been actively engaged in the teaching and training of psychology students, in advocacy efforts to advance the profession of psychology and of health service psychology, and in the design and ongoing development of a successful university-based PsyD program.

Upon receipt of the award, Dr. Barnett said, “I am deeply humbled to be recognized with this award and to have my name included in the same sentence as Dr. Al Wellner. He was such a luminary of our profession and a truly amazing role model for all psychologists, demonstrating such a great commitment to advancing our profession through service to others. In the coming years, I hope to build on my past contributions and to continue working to advance our profession, to support our junior colleagues and trainees, and to support the mission of the National Register.”

Dr. Barnett is a licensed psychologist who is Board Certified in Clinical Psychology and in Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. Additionally, he is a distinguished practitioner of the National Academies of Practice. He is a Professor of Psychology and Associate Dean for the Social Sciences and Graduate Programs at Loyola University Maryland in addition to maintaining a private practice over the past 34 years. He has been President of the Maryland Psychological Association and of three APA divisions along with many other leadership roles to include Chair of the Ethics Committees of the Maryland Psychological Association, American Psychological Association, and American Board of Professional Psychology, and Vice Chair of the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists. He has over 200 publications and has provided over 350 professional presentations and workshops both in-person and online, focusing primarily on ethics and professional practice issues for psychologists.

Dr. Barnett has been credentialed by the National Register since 1987.
