At the National Register’s spring meeting, the Board of Directors voted to present the 2017 Judy E. Hall, PhD, Early Career Psychologist Award to Abbey J. Hughes, PhD.

The award is named after Judy E. Hall, PhD, the Executive Officer of the National Register from 1990 to 2013. The award recognizes excellence in a National Register credentialed psychologist with fewer than ten years of postdoctoral experience, and the associated $2,500 stipend supports a project that advances the mission, vision, and values of the National Register.

Dr. Hughes was selected for the Hall award based on her outstanding achievements as an ECP and her plan to use the $2,500 award stipend to implement a 12-month project to enhance sleep assessment procedures and treatment recommendations through a sleep diary program (SDP) within the Johns Hopkins PM&R outpatient neurorehabilitation psychology services. Expected outcomes include more reliable and accurate assessment of sleep behaviors, improvements in sleep, and greater healthcare satisfaction. If successful, the proposed SDP will be implemented as a standard procedure within the clinic.

Upon receipt of the award, Dr. Hughes said, “I am so honored to accept the 2017 Judy E. Hall Early Career Psychologist Award. The National Register has provided a wonderful avenue for early career psychologists to distinguish themselves as health service psychologists, bank credentials, and elevate psychologists’ contributions to healthcare. As a rehabilitation and health service psychologist, I am fortunate to work with an exceptional interprofessional team of rehabilitation and neuropsychologists, physiatrists, rehabilitation therapists, and support staff. Our work is especially rewarding as it allows us to improve symptom management and health-related quality of life for individuals with disabilities and chronic health conditions such as multiple sclerosis, stroke, brain injury, and spinal cord injury. Given that sleep disturbance is a common and distressing symptom among many of our patients and research participants, I am grateful to the National Register for recognizing our work and allowing us to implement a project to improve sleep assessment in these populations.”

Dr. Hughes earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Clinical Health Psychology from the University of Kansas in 2014. She completed her predoctoral internship at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, where she received intensive training in clinical neuropsychology and worked with a wide range of neurorehabilitation populations. She additionally completed a postdoctoral fellowship in multiple sclerosis rehabilitation research at the University of Washington and VA Puget Sound Health Care System. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Her work broadly aims to understanding factors that influence cognitive and behavioral outcomes in rehabilitation populations. She is currently investigating novel approaches to assessment and treatment of sleep disturbance among individuals with multiple sclerosis.

Dr. Hughes has been credentialed by the National Register since 2016.

This announcement will also be featured in the National Register’s Fall 2017 issue of the Journal of Health Service Psychology.
