Abstract

Trauma amputation triggers intense psychological reactions and causes monumental life changes. Roughly half of amputations are the result of medical complications and half are from traumatic events such as industry and automobile accidents. Shock, dismay, and anger are typical initial emotional reactions. Pain, depression, and adaptation of life changes are longer term challenges. Psychological care should be an integrated component during all stages of recovery and adjustment.
