National Register Continuing Education Program Approved By New York Board of Psychology

The New York Board of Psychology recently approved the National Register as a continuing education provider for psychologists. As of January 1, 2021, National Register webinars, video trainings, conference sessions, and article-based exams will count toward New York continuing education credits requirements for contact hours.

The New York Psychology Board is offering a phased-in approach to the continuing education requirements based on licensing psychologists’ upcoming renewal date. Please see the FAQs on their website.

Please note you cannot apply credits earned prior to January 1, 2021, to future license renewals.

Archived and Live Continuing Education Courses

The National Register hosts hundreds of archived continuing education courses on CE.NationalRegister.org. These courses are based on articles, prior webinars, and training videos, and are free for National Register Health Service Psychologists and National Register Practice Academy members—and available at a charge to non-members. These courses meet the New York State Board’s criteria as self-study courses. Because these courses do not include a live, interactive component, NY-state licensed psychologists may only earn 12 of the 36 required contact hours through these archived courses. Live, interactive continuing education courses and self-study courses provide one contact hour for each 50 minutes spent on the exercise. For further details, refer to the New York State Board’s FAQ page.

We recently received clarification from the NY Board that our entire catalogue of archived courses is approved under the new provisions as self-study CE, so it does not matter if a course was developed pre-2021 as long as you complete it after January 1, 2021.

The National Register also offer a series of live, interactive continuing education courses. These include the monthly Clinical Webinar Series and the offerings at the National Practice Conference, presented every November in Washington, DC, in conjunction with our friends at The Trust. There are no limitations on the number of these courses completed (i.e., NY-state licensed psychologists could earn all 36 of the required contact hours through these live, interactive continuing education courses). The Clinical Webinar Series is free for National Register Health Service Psychologists and National Register Practice Academy members—and available at a charge to non-members. Registration for the 2021 National Practice Conference will begin in March 2021.

The National Register of Health Service Psychologists is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0010.
