Antonio E. Puente, PhD, Elected to National Register of Health Service Psychologists Board of Directors

The National Register Board of Directors elected Antonio E. Puente, PhD, effective January 1, 2023.  

In response to his election, Dr. Puente remarked, “Being selected to serve on the Board of Directors for the National Register is an honor and a privilege. The evolution of the National Register into an organization that not only credentials but represents and advocates for practicing psychologists and the profession of psychology makes this a unique opportunity. I look forward to working with the staff and Board of the Register as well as representing all members of the organization, including my two children who are practicing psychologists and members of the Register.” 

Tiffany N. Brown, PhD, Chair of the National Register Board of Directors, commented on the election: “On behalf of the Board of Directors, congratulations to Dr. Puente. The Board looks forward to working with our newly elected members to strengthen the identity of the National Register as the professional home for health service psychologists.” 

Dr. Antonio E. Puente was born in La Habana, Cuba, and immigrated to the US in 1960. Dr. Puente received a PhD from the University of Georgia. He has taught at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) since 1981,  maintains a private practice in clinical neuropsychology, and is the founder (2002) and director of mental health services at the Cape Fear Clinic, a bilingual multi-disciplinary health center serving communities that are under-resourced. He is on the Board of Trustees for the American Psychological Foundation and Albizu University.  He has served as President of the NC Psychological Association, NC Psychological Foundation, Hispanic Neuropsychological Association, National Academy of Neuropsychology, Society for Clinical Neuropsychology (Division 40 of APA), and Society for Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology (Division 6 of APA), as well as the 125th President of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Puente is the founding director of UNCW’s Centro Hispano, and his research focuses on the interface between culture and neuropsychology. Dr. Puente founded and edited the journals Neuropsychology Review and Journal of Interprofessional Education & Practice and a neuropsychology book series. 

Dr. Puente has been credentialed by the National Register since 2017.

The National Register of Health Service Psychologists was established in 1974 and is the largest credentialing organization for psychologists and psychology doctoral students. We are an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to improving healthcare by identifying psychologists who meet specific education and training standards, and by verifying these professionals to consumers, healthcare organizations, and regulatory bodies. The National Register currently credentials 10,000 Health Service Psychologists and has approximately 5,000 psychology doctoral student and postdoctoral trainee members of its Associate Program.
