We are excited to feature Dr. Gilbert Newman, the current president of the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology (NCSPP) and the Vice President for Academic Affairs at the Wright Institute, Berkeley.

Dr. Newman has been a proud member of the National Register since 2007. He has played an active role in our profession serving as the President of the California Psychological Association (2006), a Board Member for the Association for the Advancement of Psychology (2009-2012, the former psychology PAC), Chair of the Board of Educational Affairs (2007-2008), Chair of the APA Practice Organization (2008-2009), Committee of State Leaders, APA Council Member, Good Governance Project Team Member, Federal Advocacy Coordinator and Federal Education Advocacy Coordinator.

Throughout his career as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Newman has been involved in the NCSPP providing presentations on topics including clinical supervision, integrated primary care, leadership, social justice, advocacy and public policy curriculum, developing innovative training to meet community needs, the NCSPP’s history, accreditation workshops, and more. NCSPP has demonstrated leadership and educational innovation through its commitment to the early development of a competency based educational system, a broad set of diversity competencies, and a commitment to the integration of practice-based evidence and evidence-based practice. This year, our annual Mid-Winter Conference is focused on revisions of the NCSPP Educational Model (Peterson, et al, 1997). A second conference aim focuses on contemporary standards of professionalism, and our third aim is to elevate advocacy, public policy, and social justice competencies. There will also be numerous educational sessions and panels, including one devoted to the accreditation of master’s programs in health service psychology and another devoted to the value of the doctoral degree.

NCSPP educates psychologists prepared for and devoted to careers in public and independent practice. The National Register has long been a sponsor of NCSPP. The Register supports our students in their development through graduate training and into their early career through mentoring, credentials banking and with recognized credibility as a well prepared and qualified psychologist. I have long been impressed by the high quality and cutting-edge educational opportunities afforded through the National Register CE program and through the Journal of Health Service Psychology. The National Register is an important organizational ally and valuable resource for me as a clinician and educator.
