Position Description

Position Overview

The Editor-in-Chief (EIC) provides strategic, intellectual, and operational leadership for the Journal of Health Service Psychology (JHSP). The EIC is responsible for maintaining the journal’s scientific rigor, clinical relevance, and national prominence as a leading publication serving health service psychologists. This role ensures the JHSP advances evidence-based practice, addresses emerging issues in healthcare delivery, and reflects the evolving landscape of health service psychology.

Deadline to apply is 11:59pm ET on July 15, although applications will be considered as they are submitted. Anticipated start date is September 2026.

Key Responsibilities

Editorial Leadership & Vision

  • Set and execute a clear editorial vision aligned with the mission of the JHSP and the National Register.
  • Identify emerging trends, innovations, and priority topics in health service psychology.
  • Ensure a balance of scholarly rigor and practical relevance for clinicians, educators, and policymakers.

Manuscript Oversight

  • Oversee the peer review process to ensure fairness, timeliness, and quality.
  • Make final decisions on manuscript acceptance, revision, or rejection.
  • Maintain high standards for methodological integrity, ethical compliance, and clinical applicability.

Editorial Board Management

  • Recruit, develop, and retain a diverse and high-performing Editorial Board.
  • Provide guidance and performance expectations for Associate Editors and reviewers.
  • Foster an inclusive and collaborative editorial culture.

Content Development

  • Proactively solicit high-quality submissions, including special issues and invited papers.
  • Encourage contributions that bridge research, practice, and policy.
  • Promote interdisciplinary perspectives relevant to health service delivery.

Journal Growth & Impact

  • Enhance the JHSP’s visibility, readership, and impact within the field.
  • Collaborate on strategies to improve indexing, citations, and overall reputation.
  • Support marketing and dissemination efforts, including digital and social platforms.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as the primary liaison between publisher and the National Register.
  • Represent the JHSP at conferences, professional meetings, and public forums.
  • Engage with the broader psychology community to strengthen JHSP’s role as a professional resource.

Operational Oversight

  • Ensure efficient editorial workflows and adherence to publication timelines.
  • Work closely with the publisher on production schedules and policies.
  • Monitor metrics and use data to inform strategy and improvements.

Qualifications

  • Licensed as a psychologist.
  • Established record of scholarly publication and editorial experience.
  • Recognized expertise in health service psychology and clinical practice.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in scholarly publishing.
  • Familiarity with peer review systems and academic publishing standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience as Editor, Associate Editor, or Editorial Board member of a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead strategic initiatives and grow a publication’s impact.
  • Broad professional network within health service psychology.

Term, Time Commitment & Compensation

  • Typical term: 3–5 years, renewable upon review.
  • Estimated time commitment: 8–12 hours per week (varies based on submission volume).
  • The Editor-in-Chief will receive an annual stipend in the range of $15,000–$25,000, commensurate with experience, workload, and journal needs.

Performance Expectations

  • Maintain high-quality, timely publication cycles.
  • Increase the manuscript pipeline.
  • Ensure a positive experience for authors, reviewers, and readers.
  • Secure an impact factor for the JHSP.
  • Regularly report metrics to the Board of Directors and CEO consistent with the format promulgated by the American Psychological Association.
  • Advance the JHSP’s contribution to and impact on the field of health service psychology.
