In designing a certificate program to enrich the clinical capabilities of psychology doctoral students, we’ve taken what we do best at the National Register—presenting complex clinical problem-solving in easily digestible formats—and applied it to the clinical development of psychology doctoral students. Certificate program training sessions are only open to student members of the National Register Associate Program. There is no charge to attend these sessions or to join the National Register Associate Program. JOIN NOW if you are not yet an Associate.

Student members of the Associate Program can register for both sessions of “Exploring Forensic Psychology: Key Concepts, Practical Applications, Professional Development, And All The Stuff We Wish We Knew Ahead Of Time,” presented by Dr. Andrew Osborn and Dr. Brit Pereira. The two-part series will take place on December 3 and December 10, 2:00-3:30pm ET (1pm CT/12pm MT/11am PT). Each session incorporates approximately one hour of presentation time with a dedicated block of Q&A time during the 1.5 hour session.

Session 1
Associates can watch the archive here.

Drs. Osborn and Pereira will start with an overview of what forensic psychology is, how it’s defined, when you are operating in a forensic role versus providing treatment in a forensic setting, how it’s different than clinical psychology, and discuss ethical issues within forensic practice. They will then discuss different types of common civil and criminal forensic evaluations and then more information on competency to stand trial and mental status at the time of the offense evaluations. They plan to wrap up with a case presentation of a sanity evaluation.

Session 2

Drs. Osborn and Pereira will provide a lot of broad and specific information regarding the training trajectory from doctoral programs through postdoc fellowships, experiences to try and obtain and settings to work in, licensure, board certification, and different settings you can work post education. They will discuss core competencies for practice and an overview of the Specialty Guidelines for Forensic Psychology, and end with self-care/consultation and life-long learning.
