Training 1: Introduction to Working With Individuals Who Are Suicidal

Roundtable Discussion Chaired by David A. Jobes, PhD, ABPP (30 minutes)
This session will center on three introductory elements of working with suicidal individuals. First, an introduction to suicidality including myths, beliefs, and biases as well as helpful tips and skills to approaching suicide. Next, an introduction to suicide-specific evidence-based strategies will be provided – these are one touch interventions you can implement directly with a suicidal individual. Finally, practical and procedural considerations when working with individuals who are suicidal will be introduced.

Training 2: Suicide Risk: Assessment & Evidence-Based Practices

Roundtable Discussion Chaired by David A. Jobes, PhD, ABPP (30 minutes)
This session will provide an overview of suicide risk assessment tools and current evidence-based practices for managing suicide. Case examples will be shared to illustrate these approaches.

Training 3: Suicide and Mental Health Professionals

This session will have three main foci: different communities touched by suicide and cultural considerations, seeking supervision and support when working with suicidal patients, and self-care for mental health providers.

About the Presenters

Dr. Chalker is an Advanced Women’s Health Postdoctoral Fellow in the Clinical Research Postdoctoral Residency Program at the VA San Diego Healthcare System/University of California, San Diego. She graduated with a PhD in clinical psychology from The Catholic University of America. She has been working in suicide prevention intervention research for the past ten years.

Dr. Ehret is a staff psychologist and clinical supervisor at the VA San Diego Healthcare System. She earned her doctoral degree from The Catholic University of America. As a licensed clinical psychologist and Suicidologist, she specializes in suicide prevention/risk assessment and providing clinical services to Veterans living with psychosis. She also serves on the Board of Directors of Survivors of Suicide Loss, San Diego and is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Au is a second-year Postdoctoral Clinical and Research Fellow of the 3 East Adolescent Residential DBT Program at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Originally from Hong Kong, she completed her BA at the University of Michigan and holds a PhD in clinical psychology from The Catholic University of America. Through her clinical and scientific endeavors, she strives to enhance the quality of care for teens who engage in suicidal ideation and behaviors, as well as to provide better support for their family members.

Dr. Jobes is a Professor of Psychology, Director of the Suicide Prevention Laboratory, and Associate Director of Clinical Training at The Catholic University of America. He has published six books and numerous peer-reviewed journal articles. Dr. Jobes is a past President of the American Association of Suicidology (AAS) and is now a Board Member of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and serves on AFSP’s Scientific Council and the Public Policy Council. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and is Board certified in clinical psychology (American Board of Professional Psychology).
