June W. J. Ching, PhD, ABPP, Elected to National Register of Health Service Psychologists Board of Directors

At its December meeting, the National Register Board of Directors elected June W. J. Ching, PhD, ABPP, to a four-year term that began January 1, 2017.

Dr. June W. J. Ching, PhD, ABPP, is a Board Certified Clinical Psychologist who has been practicing in Hawaii for 36 years as a clinical and forensic psychologist, concentrating on the psychological assessment and treatment of a culturally diverse population of children, adults, couples, and families. She is a Clinical Affiliate Faculty with the University of Hawaii’s Clinical Studies Department of Psychology. Dr. Ching also serves as a senior consultant to two statewide judiciary programs—Kids First, a divorce education program, and the Children’s Justice Center, for which she provides workshops, training, supervision, and expert witness testimony on the forensic investigative interviewing of child sexual abuse, felony physical abuse, and witness to domestic violence. Prior to entering full-time independent practice, Dr. Ching was the Chief Psychologist and Director of Training at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu.

Dr. Ching received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Northwestern University and M.Ed. from Harvard University. As a second generation Chinese-American, she has endeavored to further culturally competent diversity initiatives in publications, training, policies, and leadership development. Dr. Ching is on the editorial board of Practice Innovations, along with being an invited reviewer for the American Psychologist and Ethics and Behavior.

A Fellow of APA, her contributions have focused on the advancement of psychology as a profession through advocacy, public education, and the promotion of initiatives which further the field for next generation of practicing psychologists. Dr. Ching has served in key leadership positions within her state and national governance, including President of the Hawaii Psychological Association, and as the first Asian-American woman President of APA Division 42 in 2015. She recently completed a term as vice-chair on the APA Practice Organization Committee for the Advancement of Professional Practice and holds a seat on the APA Council of Representatives.

In recognition of Dr. Ching’s dedicated and meritorious service in the areas of practice, science, public interest, education and training, she is the recipient of notable awards, including the 2016 Hawaii Psychological Association Lifetime Achievement Award and the APA Presidential Citation.

In response to her election, Dr. Ching remarked, “I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors of the National Register of Health Service Psychologists, an association which closely parallels my lifelong pursuit of advancing professional psychology and advocating for the full spectrum of services that psychologists are uniquely qualified to delivery for our diverse communities. I am most impressed that the National Register is invested at being on the forefront of providing our current and future generation of psychologists with access to relevant and timely resources which will assist them with the rapidly changing landscape of integrated healthcare, while also enhancing the credentialing and licensure mobility process for psychologists. It is truly exciting to see that the National Register is actively promoting outreach to graduate students and early career psychologists, recognizing trailblazers, and joining efforts with likeminded stakeholders to help create more accredited pre-doctoral training sites. Dr. Ching has been credentialed by the National Register since 1982.
