The National Register of Health Service Psychologists is pleased to announce the appointment of Morgan T. Sammons, PhD, ABPP, as Executive Officer. Dr. Sammons has a long history of leadership and advocacy in the profession, which includes many years’ experience working with the National Register, having served as Chair of the Board of Directors from 2004 to 2008. Dr. Sammons will begin his tenure on July 15, 2014.

As Executive Officer, Dr. Sammons will lead an organization of more than 10,000 health service psychologists. Dr. Sammons commented on his selection, “I’m honored to join the National Register at such a pivotal juncture in the history of our healthcare delivery system. We know that the Affordable Care Act mandates access to a broadly expanded range of mental health services. This creates a tremendous opportunity to position health service psychologists for success in integrated healthcare settings through advocacy, education, and collaboration.”

Founded in 1974, the National Register is dedicated to identifying qualified psychologists to consumers, healthcare organizations, and regulatory bodies. The National Register has had only two Executive Officers prior to Dr. Sammons’ appointment, Alfred M. Wellner, PhD, from 1974–1989, and Judy E. Hall, PhD, from 1990–2013. Dr. Sammons reflected on the legacy of his predecessors, “As I work with the staff and Board of Directors to further expand the scope and mission of the organization, I will be both mindful of, and inspired by, the accomplishments of these two remarkable psychologists.”

Most recently, Dr. Sammons served as Systemwide Dean of the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University. Dr. Sammons is a retired Captain in the US Navy, having served as the Navy’s Clinical Psychology Specialty Leader, Special Assistant to the Navy Surgeon General for Mental Health and Traumatic Brain Injury, and in a number of positions both in the US and abroad.  He completed overseas tours of duty in Japan, Iceland, and in support of the First Marine Division in Fallujah, Iraq. He is one of the first graduates of the Department of Defense’s Psychopharmacology Demonstration Project.

Dr. Sammons is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Divisions 18, 19, 28, 31, 42, and 55), past president of APA’s division 55, current Chair of the California Psychological Association’s Division 5 (Psychopharmacology) and a past president of the Maryland Psychological Association. He has served on the Council of Representatives of the APA, and is a former member of the APA’s Policy and Planning board and the Committee on Rural Health. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology (Clinical). With over 60 journal articles or book chapters and two edited volumes, he contributes regularly to the professional literature. He is an associate editor of the journals Psychological Services and Military Psychology. He lectures extensively on issues pertaining to prescriptive authority and the professional practice of psychology.

Raymond A. Folen, PhD, Chair of the National Register Board of Directors, stated of Dr. Sammons’ appointment, “We were fortunate to have an excellent group of applicants, and those on the short list went through an extensive interviewing and vetting process.  The three factors that figured most prominently into our selection were Morgan’s collaborative approach to healthcare, his vision to enhance the value of the credential for the organization, and his proven track record as a leader and strong advocate for psychology. The Board and staff are delighted to welcome Morgan to the National Register.”
