Sen Daryl Steinberg has been a passionate advocate for Mental Health during his period in office as a California state legislator. While living in California, I noted the absence of any funded academic or not-for-profit group that rested at the intersection of public policy and mental health. Institutes examining public policy and health are not uncommon, but few exist with a specific focus on mental health and public policy. Sen Steinberg has been at the forefront of the movement to recognize the individual and societal consequences of substituting incarceration for treatment for those with chronic mental illness and substance abuse problems. Let us hope that the efforts of Sen Steinberg, founded in a sense of social justice and reinforced by family experience, can help us move towards more rationale and humane methods for addressing the needs of those with chronic mental illness.
