June 4, 2014 (Washington, D.C.) – At its May meeting, the National Register Board of Directors re-elected Raymond A. Folen, PhD, to a four-year term beginning on January 1, 2015. He has served as Chair of the Board since 2012.
Dr. Folen comments on his re-election, “It has been a challenge and a pleasure serving on the National Register’s Board of Directors for the past four years, and I am honored that my colleagues on the Board elected me to serve a second term. I look forward to working with our new Executive Officer and staff to increase the value of the HSP credential, both by advancing our position in healthcare and enhancing our outreach to consumers.”
Dr. Folen earned his PhD from the University of Hawaii in 1978. Since 1984, he has worked at the Triple Army Medical Center in Hawaii, where he was first the Chief of Behavioral Medicine and Health Psychology Service and later became the Chief of the Department of Psychology in 2007. He also serves as the Co-Director of the Virtual Reality Research Laboratory at Pacific Telehealth & Technology HUI in Honolulu. Dr. Folen’s research and professional interests span a wide range of issues including primary care psychology, telehealth, psychopharmacology and biofeedback. Since 1997, Dr. Folen has served on the editorial board of the APA’s publication, Psychological Services. In 2009, he was named the Federal Manager/Supervisor of the Year by the Honolulu-Pacific Federal Executive Board.
Current Board member, Sarah Shelton, PsyD, reflects on the decision-making process, “I was impressed by the talent, dedication, and enthusiasm demonstrated by so many of our Members who applied for these positions. Reviewing these applications underscored for me what a valuable resource and treasure the Register has in its membership. I am even more proud to be affiliated with an organization comprised of such accomplished individuals who are willing to serve in this capacity. The current Board Members are thrilled to be joined by our returning Chair, Dr. Ray Folen."
Dr. Folen has been credentialed by the National Register since 1979.
