John C. Norcross, PhD, Receives National Register Lifetime Achievement Award

NorcrossThe National Register of Health Service Psychologists Board of Directors announced John C. Norcross, PhD, as the recipient of the 2014 Alfred M. Wellner Lifetime Achievement Award.

Named for the first Executive Officer, Alfred M. Wellner, PhD, the award is the National Register’s highest honor presented to a psychologist for significant contributions to the profession.Upon receipt of the award, Dr. Norcross said, “I am honored and humbled to receive the Alfred M. Wellner Award. My involvement with the National Register – its staff, Board, and registrants – has been one of the highlights of my professional life.”

Dr. Norcross received his PhD from the University of Rhode Island and is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of Scranton. Authoring more than 300 publications, Dr. Norcross wrote the acclaimed self-help book Changeology, and has co-written numerous books, principally in the areas of psychotherapy, clinical training, and self-change. An engaging teacher and clinician, Dr. Norcross has conducted workshops and lectures in 30 countries and was past-president of the American Psychological Association’s Division of Psychotherapy and the Division of Clinical Psychology. He has served as an APA council representative and on the Board of Directors of the National Register of Health Service Psychologists.

In her nomination letter, member of the National Register Board of Directors Erica H. Wise, PhD, applauded Dr. Norcross’ career. Dr. Wise remarked, “John is an accomplished scholar, author, researcher, and clinician who works tirelessly to advance the profession. He is nationally regarded as a leader. Having published numerous articles, chapters, and books, his body of work has positively influenced consumer perceptions of psychology. He is the embodiment of a health service psychologist.”

Dr. Norcross has been credentialed by the National Register since 1989.
