We currently have an opening for Manager State Policy. This position is responsible for supporting NAMI state organizations and grasstops leaders in advancing policy priorities that improve the lives of people with mental health conditions. The Manager is also responsible for tracking legislation, conducting policy analysis, developing policy-related resources for state leaders and executing strategies to increase the visibility and effectiveness of NAMI’s grassroots advocacy.

STRATEGIC GOALS:

This position is expected to:

  • Provide support to state organizations and grasstops leaders to advance key policy initiatives related to decriminalization, crisis services, early intervention, parity and mental health coverage
  • Research and analyze state mental health-related legislation and policy proposals
  • Build relationships with state policy leaders and identify opportunities to increase their understanding of policy priorities and ways to influence policymakers
  • Develop and implement strategies, tools and resources to support and develop NAMI grasstops leadership network

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide strategic support to state organizations and grasstops leaders to advance key initiatives related to decriminalization, crisis services, early intervention, parity and mental health coverage
  • Research and analyze state mental health-related legislation and policy proposals
  • Develop and implement strategies, tools and resources to support and develop NAMI grasstops leadership network
  • Build relationships with state policy leaders and identify opportunities to increase their understanding of policy priorities and ways to influence policymakers
  • Track emerging research and political trends and identify policymakers to cultivate as mental health champions to advance policy priorities
  • Write and edit issue briefs, testimony, policy reports, legislative leave-behinds and other policy-related resources for state and affiliate organizations
  • Develop and sustain strategic relationships with key coalitions and stakeholders focused on state-level policy issues
  • Assist in the execution of grant deliverables related to Advocacy and Public Policy team’s work
  • Work with federal policy team to coordinate strategies for grassroots engagement
  • Write and post timely news items and web content on leading state policy issues
  • Perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three to five years of experience in relevant field; advanced degree preferred
  • Knowledge of issues related to mental health policy, such as criminal justice, crisis services, parity and coverage topic areas
  • Experience with tracking and analyzing state legislation and regulations
  • Knowledge of how to influence legislative and regulatory processes
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in forging collaborative and effective relationships
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively to time-sensitive issues
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and across teams
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite

This position is based in Arlington, VA.
