The National Register of Health Service Psychologists is proud to present the 2021 Judy E. Hall Early Career Psychologist Award to J. Konadu Fokuo, PhD, of the University of Illinois at Chicago. This award comes with a $10,000 stipend to fund a project that aims to enhance the contributions of psychology to health care.

This award, named in honor of the National Register’s Executive Officer from 1990 through 2013, is presented annually to a National Register credentialed psychologist with fewer than 10 years of postdoctoral experience. This award supports a specific project that will enhance the contributions of psychology to health care.

The National Register’s Awards Committee was impressed with Dr. Fokuo’s plan to use the $10,000 award stipend to support a project that will examine and reduce stigma in healthcare settings.

Upon receiving the award, Dr. Fokuo said, “I am deeply honored to receive the Judy E. Hall Early Career Psychologist Award. Behavioral health stigma is a barrier to healthcare delivery. Fear of being judged and/or discriminated against often prevents patients with opioid misuse disorders or those who are at risk of these disorders from getting the help they need. This award will support an investigation of methods to increase education and reduce stigma among health care providers working with patients with opioid misuse disorders. I am grateful to the National Register for their recognition and support.”

Dr. J. Konadu Fokuo is a Clinical Instructor with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in Rehabilitation Psychology at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Her internship and postdoctoral fellowships (clinical and research) were at University of California, San Francisco. Her clinical, leadership, and research efforts focus on developing targeted interventions for persons with behavioral health disorders. Dr. Fokuo’s primary research interest is in reducing stigma (structural, public, and self) as a barrier to health service utilization for stigmatized population. Her research utilizes personal recovery narratives in healthcare student training to increase education and reduce stigma toward persons with behavioral health concerns.

Dr. Fokuo has been credentialed by the National Register since 2020.

This announcement will also be featured in the National Register’s Journal of Health Service Psychology.
