National Psychologist Trainee Register (NPTR) Application Guidelines and Instructions

Information and Guidelines for Application to the NPTR

  • The NPTR application is completed in three separate parts each corresponding to one of the three educational and training Criteria for Credentialing as a Health Service Provider in Psychology. Your education and training are evaluated one step at a time, and your application for credentialing as a Health Service Provider in Psychology can be completed when you finish your education and training.

The fee for applying to the NPTR is $150 and is divided into three equal and nonrefundable $50 payments each corresponding to one of the three parts of the application. The fee remains frozen for a period of 7 years regardless of any increases in the standard National Register application fee.

Part I: Completion of Internship

You are eligible to open your trainee record at the completion of internship. To begin the application process, review the Guidelines for Defining an Internship or Organized Health Service Training Program in Psychology , complete the online Application Form and view the Trainee List.

Documentation of Internship or Organized Health Service Training Program:

  • Complete the Internship or Organized Health Service Training Program Form and the Breadth & Quality of Internship Experience Form.
  • Sign and date the Attestation Form.
  • Submit the general information and the above internship information along with the $50 credential review fee to the National Register.
  • Ensure that your supervisor(s) completes and submits directly to the National Register the Internship Confirmation Form(s), available in a PDF format online or by contacting the National Register.

Part II: Completion of Doctoral Degree

You are eligible to complete Part II of the application once you have received your doctoral degree. Review the Guidelines for Defining a Doctoral Degree in Psychology.

Documentation of Doctoral Degree:

  • Complete the Education and Highest Degree Form and submit that form to the National Register with the $50 credential review fee.
  • Sign and date the Attestation Form.
  • Request an official transcript be submitted from the educational institution granting the doctoral degree directly to the National Register.
  • Request an official transcript be submitted from any other educational institutions in which you completed graduate level courses directly to the National Register.

Part III: Completion of Postdoctoral Supervised Experience

This section completes the application. Review the Guidelines for Postdoctoral Supervised Experience.

Documentation of Postdoctoral Supervised Experience:

  • Complete the Supervised Postdoctoral Experience Form for each site and/or supervisor.
  • Sign and date the Attestation Form.
  • Complete the Breadth & Quality of Postdoctoral Experience Form.
  • Send the forms along with the $50 credential review fee to the National Register.
  • Request your supervisor(s) to complete the Postdoctoral Supervisor Confirmation Form(s) and submit it to the National Register.

When you have met all the above criteria, you can apply for a license to practice at the independent level. And, when you receive your license, you may then apply to become a National Register Health Service Provider in Psychology.
