The National Psychologist Trainee Register: Glossary of Terms

How to Read Online Listings

  • Name: First, middle and last name of NPTR applicant. Doctoral degree is listed ONLY if the NPTR applicant has completed Part II of the NPTR application.
  • Address: City and state of the NPTR applicant's address are provided here as an aid in identifying the individual as well as the jurisdiction in which he/she resides.
  • Part II: Doctoral Degree in Psychology. This field lists the name of the school/institution that granted the NPTR applicant's NR approved doctoral degree as well as the year awarded. It may also indicate that this part of the application is in process. If this field is left blank, the individual has not yet applied for Part II of his/her NPTR application.
  • Part III: Postdoctoral Supervised Experience. This field lists the facility name and state where the NPTR applicant successfully completed his/her NR approved postdoctoral experience and year of completion. It may also indicate that this part of the application is in process. If this field is left blank, the individual has not yet applied for Part III of his/her NPTR application.
  • Application in Process: The NPTR applicant has submitted this part of the NPTR application, but it has not yet been approved to meet National Register guidelines and criteria.
  • Licensed In: Lists the jurisdiction in which the NPTR applicant is currently and actively licensed, certified, or registered by the state/provincial board of examiners of psychology at the independent practice level of psychology, as well as the year the license was originally obtained. "Currently and actively licensed, certified, or registered as a psychologist at the independent practice level" means currently, actively licensed, certified, or registered for psychology practice generally, with no material limitations, conditions, or restrictions (e.g., supervision or other conditions or limitations on practice) required by a state, provincial, or territorial board or similar governmental body.
  • Registrant: If this field contains a link to access the Find a Psycholgist Database, the NPTR applicant has completed all three parts of the application, obtained licensure, submitted registration forms and has been awarded the National Register of Health Service Provider in Psychology credential. The year of certification is also provided here. A Health Service Provider in Psychology is defined as a psychologist, currently and actively licensed/certified/registered at the independent practice level in his/her jurisdiction, who is trained and experienced in the delivery of direct, preventive, assessment, and therapeutic intervention services to individuals whose growth, adjustment, or functioning is impaired or to individuals who otherwise seek services.
