Pitfalls in Internship Selection
by Judy E. Hall, PhD

"I have seen many times what can happen when a doctoral student feels, understandably, enormous pressure to locate an internship site. Shortcuts are taken. Often the doctoral student is least qualified to anticipate some of the pitfalls, and that is why this article is oriented towards those who provide internship training, those who select training sites for internship, and those who evaluate internship training."

The Psychology Internship Development Toolkit
by the Council of Chairs of Training Councils (CCTC)

"The Psychology Internship Development Toolkit is intended to provide resources with which to gain institutional and financial support for creating and expanding internship programs… Our hope is that the Psychology Internship Development Toolkit will help ameliorate the imbalance between the numbers of students seeking internships and the number of available positions and thereby serve the public and profession effectively."

National Psychologist Trainee Register Credentialing Scholarships

National Psychologist Trainee Register Credentialing Scholarships are presented to doctoral students in psychology interested in becoming credentialed by the National Register through the student program, the National Psychologist Trainee Register (NPTR), but for whom the initial cost is a financial hurdle. The scholarships defray the $300 application fee for credentials banking and review and registration fee. To qualify for a scholarship, you must be either currently enrolled in a doctoral program, on internship, or starting a postdoctoral supervised experience; a APAGS member; enrolled in an APA/CPA accredited or ASPPB/National Register designated doctoral program; completed the online Application Form; and submitted a current CV and application letter.

Doctoral Student Research

To assist doctoral psychology students in research with credentialed healthcare psychologists, the National Register makes available for a greatly discounted purchase the direct mailing information for up to 2,000 Registrants for one time use. The mailing list created for the student's research may be the result of a random sample or specifically identified search characteristics that are easily available from the www.findapsychologist.org database. Examples are geographic location, areas of expertise (38 available currently), languages spoken, etc.

To obtain a search of the findapsychologist database for research purposes, the National Register requires that the doctoral student submit a written request, identify the doctoral psychologist supervisor working with the doctoral student, provide proof of current graduate student status, and a brief description of the project.   Prior to sending the information to the doctoral student,  the National Register must receive a copy of the materials that will be sent to Registrants, the $250 fee for the database and a signed statement ensuring that the mailing list will only be used once for research purposes. Upon completion of the project, the National Register requests a copy of the results of the project.
