Suggestions for Marketing Your Practice

Through Practice Characteristics:

Your online Registrant profile should describe those practice characteristics that you would like to promote. Therefore, it is important to maintain current practice information on the Online Searchable Database (OSD). This includes your areas of expertise, theoretical orientation, ages served and languages spoken. This information and your geographic location provide the search characteristics needed for those seeking services.

Through Your Communications:

Your letterhead, business cards and any communications to prospective clients should include the following language:

  • Credentialed by The National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology
  • Registrant #XXXXX, The National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology
  • Certified by The National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology since (date of approval)

It is important to note that The National Register is not a membership organization, therefore it is inaccurate to refer to your status as a "member."

Partner with Physicians:

The NR has developed Psychologist-Physician Partnering Flyers to encourage physicians and nationally credentialed psychologists to develop alliances to maximize the use of health care resources and enhance the effectiveness of overall health care. Fostering these alliances will enable psychologists to increase physicians awareness of the broad range of services that National Register Health Service Providers in Psychology are qualified to provide.
Go to our online store for more copies of these flyers. Here are some tips for how to use the flyers:

  • Send flyers to physicians in your geographic area.
  • Place at least one flyer in the waiting room of your office
  • Make flyer available to current clients so that they can review your credentials
  • Distribute the flyers to colleagues as a reminder for pateint referrals
  • Make the rounds in your building and drop off a few flyers at the various offices

Registrant Home Pages

Registrant Since 2001

Include:

  • Name
  • Practice Description
  • Honors/Awards
  • Insurance Accepted
  • Office Hours
  • Preferred Client Contact

Advertise your National Register Home Page:

The NR offers Registrant Home pages to increase practice visibility. In addition to contact information, you may list honors, awards and contributions, additional practice characteristics, office hours, types of insurance accepted, and preferred method of client contact. These home pages directly link to the OSD. Here are some other Home Page Tips

  • Place the personalized web address (www.nationalregister.org/your_name.html) on your business cards and letterhead.
  • Place the URL in any advertising materials that you distribute (brochures, ads, yellow pages, etc.).
  • Encourage your current patients to visit your home page.
  • Include your personalized web address in your "on hold" phone message.

Reach out to the Public:

Inform clients of an easy way to verify your credentials. They simply go online to Find a Psychologist and search by your name.

Maintain Professional Competence:

It is important to educate your clients about the methods you use to maintain competence including voluntarily taking advantage of continuing education, such as the National Register offers online and in The Register Report and The Psychologists' Legal Update. This obligation pertains regardless of whether licensure requirements mandate CE or not.

Psychologists should consider taking advantage of supplementary services provided by self-help groups. An excellent resource is Authoritative Guide to Self Help Resources in Mental Health by John C. Norcross et.al. (Rev.ed.), Guilford Press.
